The Ohio State University (OSU) has chosen to take on a legal battle with survivors of sexual assault for over five years. The university was found to have covered up the abuse of hundreds of students by Dr. Richard Strauss, who assaulted and raped numerous students. Despite the university releasing a report admitting to the abuse and cover-up, it has attempted to defend itself in court by maintaining that Survivors' claims are too old.
The survivors' lawsuits were initially dismissed by a federal court, but were later reinstated by the 6th circuit appellate court. OSU has appealed this decision and is now petitioning the US Supreme Court. The university has received support from other colleges, some of which have also faced sexual assault scandals.
The case is important because it could hold institutions accountable for concealing and covering up sexual abuse. OSU has a history of attempting to undermine the survivors and their legal efforts, including violating public records laws and lobbying against legislation that would give survivors their day in court. The survivors are determined to have their voices heard and to hold the university accountable for its actions.
The actions of todays administration leaves little doubt to survivors that future cases would be handled any different than Dr. Strauss. It's no longer just about Strauss survivors and the intentional cover up by OSU. It's about students today and the way this university is showing us in broad daylight how they'll react.
